"Wrong again, slugger! Of course you're a killer, even without my influence. The soldiers, Henri; that was you. Deep down, even before the program, you've always believed that some people need killing, and set that little moral stamp on your soul. You still do. I hear your little mental arguments against Xavier's faggot ideals. You just haven't learned how much fun it is yet." Gambit got right in Remy's face. "I am what you became, and will become again. Just accept it, Remy."

The strange questions about Remy LeBeau/Gambit are finally answered as the Cajun returns to the mansion to face the most dangerous man in the world: himself.

Plot Summary

At the end of September, Madelyn Bartlet received a call from Fred Duncan, her former boss at the FBI. An unidentified mutant was found near dead in St. Louis, and was in a hospital emergency room there. The mutant, believed to be connected with a series of thefts over five states, had a receipt from the mansion found in his bag. Traveling out with Betsy Braddock, the teen was easily identified as Remy LeBeau, gone missing from the mansion almost six months prior.

LeBeau was returned to the school, and installed back in the medlab there. The injuries to his head turned out to be self-inflicted, although Remy refused to explain why. Eventually released from the lab and given a room, he began to display strange behaviour. Scott Summers found him in the Danger Room, after cracking the high security system and seeming to effortlessly be able to work the highly-technical programming interface. It was then that he let slip about his strange new skills, and that LeBeau believed the Professor to be responsible.

Further incidents of a similar nature occurred, leading up to Marie-Ange's admission that of all the people in the mansion, Remy was the only one that she could see no precognitive flashes for, as if he didn't exist. Meanwhile, LeBeau's reappearance had caused considerable worry for David Langstrom at the CIA. Deciding that LeBeau was too great a risk, he ordered the activation of Gambit, through a code phrase that would reverse the psychic lobotomy performed on him years before.

When Amanda Sefton came to talk to Remy, a series of issues nearly brought Gambit out prematurely. In defending herself, Amanda blasted Gambit with a spell, but the shock had caused her to regress back to her own traumatic past. She fled to Manuel's room, her distress alerting Nathan and Madelyn something was wrong. LeBeau, already preparing to flee the school, picked up the phone to hear the code phrase and was found in the midst of a grand mal seizure.

With Amanda eventually settled and LeBeau heavily sedated in the medlab, the school had finally quieted back down. But inside Remy's head, the barrier between his past self and now had been shattered, and he found himself locked in a struggle with Gambit himself. Fortunately, on waking, Remy was still in charge of his own mind. He quickly escaped, and managed to convince Sarah Morlocke to met him. He told her the truth of the massacre that had killed the Morlocks, and took her with him to confront Chester Whelan, the man who had both engineered the massacre and who had created Gambit in the first place. Remy stole a number of the man's personal files while Sarah extracted her own lethal vengeance.

Returning a week later to the school, Remy secretly entered the Professor's office to speak with him. He had placed the files he'd stolen with Charles Xavier in return for Charles agreeing to look inside of his mind for traces of Gambit. Xavier did so, reassuring the young man that while the memories and traces of the actions remained, the consciousness of Gambit himself was truly gone. He offered him a place at the school, as a way to attempt to give himself some worth to counter the actions Gambit had committed. In order to avoid undue stress with the rest of the school, he decided to house LeBeau out in the boathouse with Cain Marko, much to both of their annoyance.
