| Nick Fury and SHIELD: General Nick Fury is the commander of SHIELD, the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement, and Logistics Division. SHIELD was formed secretly in 1983 as a covert intelligence agency answering directly to the President. Since the events of Day Zero, SHIELD has gone public as a "new" organization dealing with the growing problem of mutant terrorism. Despite being a public organization, the activities of SHIELD are still highly classified, and General Fury is often given complete authority to circumvent or ignore federal, state, and local law in the pursuit of SHIELD's mandate.
