Part 2 of the Dark Phoenix Saga.

Turning back to Apocalypse, they watched as he was lifted into the air and for all his power, his body began to diffuse, slowly dissipating into dust under the fiery glare of the woman. As his men attacked her, a fearsome display of telekinesis was shown, breaking bones, tearing away weapons and punching through armor. There was no way that Remy's team was ready to take that on.

In the wake of the Muir disaster, various teams go out to find those responsible and discover instead Apocalypse has a new plan for world domination.

Plot Summary

Following the Muir Island disaster, the senior members of X-Force and the X-Men gathered with Charles to discuss the fallout from the attack and Jean’s manifestation of the Phoenix, as well as plan their next moves. It was decided that the Dark Riders were the anomaly – it had been clear that destroying Muir had not been part of Magneto’s plan, raising the question of what was Apocalypse planning?

One team, led by Angelo, went to the location the Dark Riders had previously been spotted – Africa. From the information they were able to gather, they were able to link with Doug’s team of hackers to discover the Dark Riders had been collecting information and artifacts relating to the En-Sabah-Nur mythos. Emma, along with the occult research types as well as her sister, used her influence to gain access to the London Hellfire Club’s archives, where they were able to pull up enough information to explain why Apocalypse might have driven Jean into manifesting the Phoenix – En-Sabah-Nur had written of a powerful firebird who was said to inhabit a host in order to protect humanity from the Celestials, mythical, destructive beings who would one day arrive to judge the Earth and its inhabitants. The group was also able to provide a number of locations where the firebird was said to have manifested and would be drawn to. Meanwhile, Ororo and her team went to Africa and the last-known location of Apocalypse’s base, while Remy and his small team of four went to Cairo to follow up on rumors of Apocalypse having been there.

With eyes on the various firebird sites, they finally got a break as Apocalypse surfaced in the city of Visakhapatnam in India. Remy and his group were closest and arrived just as Apocalypse began the ritual he believed would allow him to summon the Phoenix and its host, and then strip the firebird’s power for himself.

The first part of the plan went according to plan – the Phoenix appeared, Jean its apparent host although somehow looking younger than the X-Man they knew. But Apocalypse became the victim instead of the master, as the Phoenix tore him to shreds, mentally and physically, and turned her attention to his followers.

At the same time the Phoenix appeared, the various research teams were attacked by various dopplegangers, alternate versions of themselves from other dimensions, all apparently under some kind of mental compulsion. Angelo’s team fought against their 1980’s counterparts, with Cecilia injured during the fray. Doug’s team was attacked by Nazi imposters of themselves and barely managed to defeat them. Emma’s team ran into demonic versions of themselves and they made it through though significantly worse for wear. Ororo’s team faced off against cyborg versions of themselves, and had a brush with an illusion of Lady Death.

In Visakhapatnam, the Imperial Guard Pulsar’s arrival prompted the Phoenix to destroy him and the entire city, with Remy and his team barely escaping in time by hijacking Apocalypse’s teleporter. Millions were killed in the explosion, and shortly after, the Indian Prime Minster, Lilandra Neramani sent Charles an email demanding that Jean Grey be turned over to the Imperial Guard for trial and severed all ties with the X-Men. The Professor, unable to believe his first student capable of genocide, asked Paige to build him a suppressor which could be used to contain Jean’s powers, fully intending to find her first and determine the truth. Other Xavierites were not so sure of Jean’s innocence, given her actions at Muir Island, and private debates raged.

Trivia

In an attempt to take care of the kids after the disaster, a movie night was proposed. Things got tense when Longshot and Wade both tried too hard.

Character reactions were mixed regarding the identity of the Phoenix, with some believing it was the missing Jean Grey, others suggesting it was another doppleganger.

The concept of the Phoenix is based on the Marvel comics canon.

The dopplegangers from alternate dimensions were homages to classic fiction tropes and/or Marvel comics:

1980s X-Men

Nazi X-Men

Evil Cyborgs

Inferno X-Men
