Biography
Doctor Victor Shade is the head of the Department of Social Anthropology, having taken over two years ago when the current head retired. He has been a long time professor at Cambridge and a highly decorated and respected one, despite his standoffishness.
At one point, Dr. Shade was secretly involved with Wanda while she was a student and while he was married. The affair carried on a year before Wanda, disillusioned and realizing he was never going to leave his wife for her, allowed Agatha Hakness to talk her into breaking it off. Amazingly, no gossip ever leaked - this was mainly due to Agatha tightly controlling any potential flare up. She did it out of concern for Wanda's reputation and Victor's standing at the college - she considered them both fools for ever allowing it to develop but realized that Wanda had legitimate feelings for the man and even to Victor it was more than a physical relationship. (Agatha's husband, Arthur, got him incredibly drunk one night to get to the bottom of the situation and they found that Victor cared, quite deeply, for Wanda but saw no way for the relationship to go beyond what they had due to his marriage and his status as a professor.)
After Wanda, Victor stayed true to his marriage until his wife passed away after being involved in a car accident.
