Former model and STRIKE agent, Betsy Braddock came to Xavier's following a mission that left her blinded. Her sight restored by Nathaniel Essex in a controversial operation, Betsy was possessed by Kwannon, donor of the brain tissue used in her cure. Kwannon's reign damaged Betsy's confidence and many of her relationships, including that with Scott Summers, and she spent the next few years somewhat aimless. X-Man for a time, she eventually shifted towards the team's intelligence operations and then helped create X-Force. The public face of the group's cover identity, the Snow Valley Memorial Center for Mutant Affairs, Betsy has taken a sabbatical in order to assist her twin brother Brian care for their mentally ill elder sibling, Jamie.

Convinced she was a tool of the devil, Jeanne-Marie repressed her mutant powers, sparking off the split into her two selves, and over time her episodes became more dramatic. Recruited to [[Alpha Flight]] by [[Logan]] from off the streets, she was reunited with her brother but eventually she required hospitalisation for her mental issues. Escaping, she tracked Jean-Paul down to [[Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters| Xavier's]], where she spent a short time confusing people before returning to Canada with him for further treatment. Eventually, however, she disappeared, unable to stand what her instability was doing to her twin, winding up in France and undergoing apparently successful reintegration. She returned to Xavier's following her brother's [[Mnemovore| psionic torture]], drawn to him by their shared bond, and choosing to go with him to Muir Island when his treatment required it. She remains there, even after his return to Xavier's.
