Biography

Cletus Kasady was a serial killer responsible for at least a dozen murders in bizarre Satanic rituals in Mississippi in the mid 1980s. There was no pattern to his victims; they were of all sexes, ages, and backgrounds. The only thing they had in common was that they were all Christians who were heavily involved with their churches. Kasady was finally arrested after the murder of the teenage son of a wildly popular televangelist, but he disappeared from jail before he could be tried. While he's officially on the FBI's Most Wanted List and considered to be free and on the run, many people familiar with his case think that he himself was killed while in custody, either by another inmate or by a police officer seeking to avenge one of Kasady's victims.

The truth is that these murders weren't just the crimes of some young psychopath. Kasady was sacrificing his victims to appease the Limbo demon-mage Darkoth, a high-ranking lieutenant of Belasco. Darkoth hoped to use the power generated by the murders to lead an invasion to Earth. Furious that Kasady failed in his mission, Darkoth transported him to Limbo for punishment. Three decades of unspeakable torture have transformed Cletus Kasady into Carnage, a walking embodiment of cruel, sadistic violence. Darkoth eventually tired of Carnage and released him to the wilds of Limbo. From there, Carnage became the guardian of The Garden, a small patch of magic untainted by evil.

It was here that Illyana and a group of mansionites encountered Carnage and were hard-pressed to defeat him (twice). Finally, Carnage was apparently destroyed by Illayan's Soulsword.

Powers/Abilities

Carnage possesses superhuman strength, durability, and speed. His body is like clay, allowing him to change shape and rapidly heal from damage. He can create temporary duplicates that he directly controls, much like Multiple Man. These duplicates, called Phages, are defensively weak but just as destructive as Carnage himself. Carnage (and not his Phages) can also bleb off pieces of himself, called Toxins, which can bond to hosts and possess them; the Toxins are connected by a hivemind to Carnage himself, so while Carnage doesn't directly control the Toxins, he can get in their heads and influence them. Despite all these great powers, Carnage is vulnerable to heat and sound, which at great intensities can reduce him to a puddle of goop until he can pull himself back together.
