History

Shan's father was a former South Vietnamese soldier who had been wounded gravely during the war; his health was shaky throughout Shan's childhood. Because he was anti-Communist during the war, it was difficult for him to get the help he needed to deal with his badly-injured leg, as well as the post-traumatic stress disorder he developed after the Communists' takeover of the south in 1975. Her mother was a gentle, quiet woman under great stress. Shan is the eldest of the twins, being born two minutes before Tranh.

Nguyen, her mother's brother, was a general during the war and lived with the family in Hanoi. He helped support them with a series of minor criminal activities, unknown to his sister and her husband. He encouraged his nephew Tranh, already a troublemaker, into crime. It was at his behest that the family moved to the US in 1989. Nguyen continued his criminal activities, eventually coming to the attention of the FBI.

The younger twins, Nga and Leong, were born in 1995. When they were three years old, their parents were accidentally killed in a fire started by Nguyen and Tranh, who fled in the confusion. After this, Shan took on sole responsibility for her siblings, raising them as best she could. In August 2004 she took a job at Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, and enrolled the twins as students there.

She has had no contact with her brother or uncle since that time.
