Biography
A mutant himself, Istvan Barath has been one of the leading proponents of genetic integration in Hungary for close to fifteen years, serving in three successive governments as the Minister for Mutant Affairs. He has been at the forefront of a remarkably successful social experiment, shepherding the development of countless programs designed to develop good relations between mutants and baseline humans and encourage mutants to make positive contributions to Hungarian society with their powers. In recent years, he has turned his attention to the international stage, and has become one of the most significant pro-mutant voices in current political discourse.
Barath went to Charles Xavier for help when a mentally ill former soldier who was also a powerful mutant began to kill prominent Hungarian mutants. He also worked for a political solution to the crisis in Prague.
When the Preservers bombed the Ministry of Mutant Affairs in Budapest as part of their initial campaign of terror, Barath spoke out strongly against them and continued to do so, further solidifying his position as one of the most visible proponents of peaceful cooexistence between mutants and baseline humans.
His efforts after the bombings only heightened his stature, and when the incumbent Prime Minister retired due to ill health in April 2007, Barath was nominated to replace him. He was elected by a unanimous vote of the Hungarian assembly, provoking a gigantic party in the streets of Budapest and making history as the first open mutant to serve as the head of a government. The impact on the political climate for mutants remains to be seen.
