Plot Summary
When Jay Guthrie learns that his teenage sister Joelle has run off with an older boyfriend and joined an anti-mutant militia hiding in Kentucky caves, he mobilizes his siblings — Sam, Paige, and Mel – for a rescue. With help from X-Factor Investigations, the group returns to their childhood home to plan the search, juggling cramped sleeping arrangements in the small house and family tensions.
XFI contacts legal allies and confirms Joelle's situation qualifies as abduction. He urges the family to report her missing and gather evidence to involve state troopers. While Mel, Jay, and Sam investigate town leads, they face local hostility and old enemies, including the influential Cabot family. Sam confides in Arthur about the town’s apathy and his fear that Elle, another missing sibling, is being forgotten.
They discover the hate group calls itself "Humanity's Last Stand" and are looking to make a big, violent statement. The group makes a plan to infiltrate the caves.
The older Guthries descend together, confronting armed men guarding the militia’s hideout. After a skirmish, they find Joelle, who refuses to leave. Preacher, her manipulative boyfriend, arrives with a gun, escalating the standoff. When he fires at Paige, she protects the group in her metal form. The shock breaks Joelle’s defenses, and she agrees to return home.
Outside, the rest of XFI arrives with troopers as Garibaldi and Bobby John confront the Guthries. Bobby John inadvertently confesses to a past murder attempt, solidifying the case. Sam and Jay provide evidence, and the men are arrested. Arthur ensures the handoff to authorities is clean and cautions the family to remain wary.
Back home, Lucinda offers quiet comfort to Joelle, but Sam confronts her for years of emotional neglect. Their argument ends with Sam storming out, declaring that he and Jay are the ones holding the family together.
In the aftermath, the siblings share quiet goodbyes. Sam and Joelle begin rebuilding trust, finally speaking openly about their pain. The Guthries start the long process of healing.
