Biography
Childhood and Young Adulthood
Sharon was born in 1982 to Angela White Tree, a secretary at the Oglala Lakota College, and Pedro Friedlander, a traveling salesman. With both parents having a job, Sharon was lucky enough to grow up in somewhat better material circumstances then many of her friends, though with her father away from home and her mother working, it meant she was on her own during much of the week. On the weekends though, mother and daughter would do volunteer work or attend traditional events and when he was around Pedro would join them.
When Sharon was ten years old, disaster struck when her father was killed in an accident caused by a drunk driver. Luckily Angela managed to pull things together and was able to keep the small family afloat financially by adding teaching a class here and there in the evenings, though that meant she had far less time for her daughter. What time she did have with her, she most impressed the importance of her education to her knowing that without it her chances would be far less. When Sharon entered middle school, her mother would take her with her to work on occasion, giving her the chance to familiarize herself with some fields.
Sharon herself though did love the life outdoors, exploring the land around her. Throughout her teens she realized something was different though. She was always just better at things physically then the people around. She could run faster, climb easier, lift heavier things and when challenged to balance over a small edge, she was the only one to succeed. By the time she was sixteen something was changing though. Her friends fell away from her, many leaving school for the city or already falling victim to the rampant alcoholism on the reservation. Sharon decided she too wanted to leave. Pushed on by her mother though, Sharon graduated high school and with the help of vocational courses, she had gained her nurse’s aide license at eighteen.
Again her mother managed to get through to her daughter. If she stayed for one more year, she could work at the Pine Ridge Comprehensive Health Facility to save some money and use the reduced rates for tuition she would get at her mother’s workplace to add certifications as phlebotomist and EKG technician to her resume. Then 9/11 happened and the military sent a recruiter to the college. Sharon took it as her chance to get out. Her medical skills, her high scores on the ASVAB and her physical abilities made her a desirable candidate and before she knew it, she was shipping out to basic training and later to Fort Sam Houston in Texas for training as a medic. She added her EMT-B license to her skills. Her time in training was also a time of realization though. She was always physically the strongest, the fastest etc. When the events at the Statue of Liberty were aired on television, the pieces fell into place: she was most likely a mutant. This did not change anything though, except that she decided to hold back, to appear not too physically talented.
Military Service and Civvy Street
First she was assigned to a clinic stateside, but with invasion of Iraq this changed. Sharon was attached to a battalion of MP’s and was deployed in April 2003. There she participated in patrols, house to house searches and oversaw prisoners. She gave aid to wounded soldiers, but also to the local population and reached the rank of Sergeant. She served two tours, totaling over 36 months in Iraq. Sharon was also part of the forces deployed after Day Zero, assisting with the treatment of casualties. At the end of 2008 her enlistment was up and with the worsening health situation of her mother due to diabetes, she decided it was time to leave.
She did not return to the reservation, but settled in Rapid City. Between benefits from the Post 9/11 GI bill, a small scholarship for her Lakota background and a part time job as EMT-B, she was able to return to college and gained her associates degree in nursing, sitting for the Registered Nurse exam as well. Afterwards she found a job as E.R. nurse at the Rapid City Regional Hospital.
On the weekends she regularly visited her mother on the reservation and is generally present with the major traditional events. Back in Rapid City she found built her social circle mostly through sports, practicing martial arts (Muay Thai and Brazilian Jujitsu), tumbling and parkour. For two years she was content with his life, but slowly things started to itch. It was time for something new. Her mother realized this and also urged not to stay close for her sake. M-Day somehow only increased that urge. While she had always passed and stayed under the radar, she figured this might come to an end one day. There might actually already people who suspect the truth. A fresh start would be good.
