Biography

Life in the GDR

Christophe Nord was born to parents in Switzerland, a mother of French ancestry and a German-born father. Alain Nord was an agent of the Socialist Party of Germany, the operative functionary of the government of East Germany. When Cristophe was six years old, his mother attempted to leave his father and defect to the United States, but was detained by agents of the East German government. Cristophe was told that she had taken an educational sabbatical, when in reality she had been given a summary trial and execution due to suspicion that she would betray her husband's secrets.

At seventeen, Cristophe enrolled in the police academy, distinguishing himself both in the administrative and functional aspects of his position. Very quickly he came to the attention of the Stasi, the East German secret police, and with his father's connections, he swiftly was made a special agent.

Shortly after being brought into the ranks of the Stasi, however, Cristophe's mutant power emerged. An intense precognitive flash showed him a possible future with the Berlin Wall coming down and many of his Stasi functionaries as well as himself becoming political pariahs in the new Reconstruction era. After a short period of adjustment to his powers, Cristophe made a discovery about his mother's true fate that would change his life. Manipulating orders and arranging political favors, he was transferred out of East Germany shortly before the fall of the Berlin Wall and found one of his mother's contacts who agreed to give him safe passage out of Europe. Only days after the Reunification of East and West Germany, Alain Nord took his own life in disgrace at his son's defection.

Weapon X

The man who brought Cristophe out of Germany in the mid-1980s was Colonel William Stryker, commander of the secret Weapon X unit. Stryker and his Weapon X functionaries gave Nord the new identity of David North, cutting ties to his former identity as an East German citizen. Through various forms of conditioning and psychic engineering, David's precognition was refined and tied to his adrenalin levels, making him a more effective combat operative.

Once his assimilation and training were completed, Stryker assigned North as part of his personal field agent team along with the man North came to know as Jim Logan. Along with other trained mutant operatives, the Weapon X field team remained active through the late '80s and early '90s, including a failed attempt to destroy the USSR's attempt at a Super-Soldier program.

Following various political investigations, Stryker decided the Weapon X team needed to go underground. Most of the field agents underwent massive psionic conditioning to install a complete cover identity, turning them into average, unassuming American citizens to be seeded as sleeper agents and reactivated when needed.

Sleeper Agent and Omega Red

From June 1994 through August 2005, David North became an average white-collar employee of Initech, a corporate benefits-management firm. However, after a chance sighting of Arkady Rossovich, he began to have strange flashbacks and breaks with reality that revealed his life to be more complex than he had imagined. When confronted by Arkady, however, North's conditioning began to break down and he started to remember.

The one overpowering memory was that if things went wrong, to find Logan, his fellow Weapon X operative. At the time, however, Logan was up in Canada, and North was able to contact Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters searching for him. Upon recognizing the name Charles Xavier, North requested asylum and protection, and a team of X-Men was dispatched to bring him to a safehouse.

Through an expedient (and painful) psychic deprogramming, Psylocke's psychic knife revealed the truth of North's identity, and he began to remember who Arkady Rossovich truly was. Rossovich, the former Russian experiment known as Omega Red, had made his way to America and encountered North totally by chance. It was a failed mission to kill Omega Red that had sent North undercover, and now the Russian was looking to return the favor.

Omega Red attacked the safehouse, engaging Jetstream, Juggernaut, and Colossus in combat until North seemingly sacrificed himself to destroy the safehouse and Omega Red along with it in a gas main explosion.

After the mission, during the medical procedure to cure Jetstream of Omega Red's death spores, North called the mansion and informed Theresa Cassidy of the procedures needed to eliminate the toxic spores. Aside from a bouquet of flowers sent later that week to Betsy, North remained incognito.

Shiva

In the three years since North's resurrection, however, he found himself a man without a country. His defection had resulted in Cristophe Nord becoming a scapegoat for numerous political crimes in the unified Germany, bearing the responsibility on paper for numerous illegal operations. After escaping a GSG-9 anti-terrorist team in his former homeland, North was once more a maverick - a rogue agent on the loose. He made the decision to abandon his former life as Cristophe Nord and embrace the David North identity, one that had been expertly crafted to have no ties to his former existence with the Stasi or Weapon X.

North returned to America to try and find the remnants of the Weapon X program. Rather than endanger his former comrade and his X-Men allies by directly contacting them, he chose to go after any remnants of the Weapon X program he could find. Months of research into financial transactions (aided by his experience in the David North cover identity), he tracked down Daniel Lyman, Stryker's former right-hand man all the way to Wyoming only days after the X-Men had rescued Scott Summers. A year later, he would almost catch Lyman in Peru, being barely a week behind the X-Men once more.

However, when Lyman was taken into custody for smuggling, North made his move. Using a false identity, he posed as Lyman's lawyer, fleeing the country with his former executive officer and making Lyman a deal - information on Weapon X in exchange for his freedom. Lyman agreed, directing North to a cache of data on the Weapon X project.

The deal was a double-cross, however. While North made his way to the data cache, Lyman had activated the Shiva protocols, a series of computer programs designed to eliminate any rogue Weapon X operative, using their fellow sleeper agents as pre-programmed assassins. After killing one of his former teammates, North once more sought asylum at Xavier's. However, when John Wraith broke into the mansion looking to kill Maverick, North realized that his presence would put too many people at risk, and it was time to end the cycle once and for all.

Cooperating with X-Force, North learned the truth about the Shiva protocols, discovering that the original documentation was protected by none other than his former teammate Carol "Warbird" Danvers, who was still deep in her sleeper agent cover. While X-Force set up a sting to ambush and eliminate Wraith, Maverick confronted Danvers - a meeting that resulted in North being forced to execute yet another former teammate to break the chain of Shiva, rendering the program inert.

X-Force

After removing the threat of Shiva, North was approached by Betsy Braddock, who offered him a role with her team and a cover as the Human Resources director for the Snow Valley Memorial Center for Mutant Affairs. David accepted the offer, and found a welcome challenge in re-adjusting to a desk job that had been his cover for eleven years, and perhaps more challenging, moving into the brownstone apartment complex with his co-workers and teammates. North got to test his skills and teamwork in Bucharest while rescuing Natasha Romanova, and in doing so learned to trust in the capabilities of his new team. The Bucharest mission was quickly followed up by the prevention of an assassination attempt on William Bastion, throwing North fully into the role of field work once more.

In September 2009, as part of the fallout following the death of General Zakarov, North went deep undercover in Europe to avoid becoming a target and to gather intelligence on European mutant weaponisation programs.

Physical Characteristics

Powers

David North is a mild precognitive, but his ability is both uncontrolled and exceptionally short-term, usually with a maximum range of sixty seconds. As a result of the psionic conditioning associated with his Weapon X service, North's precognition is tied to his adrenaline, acting like an advance warning system when his fight-or-flight response kicks in. This ability allows North to see a number of possible outcomes of any action he takes, and select the one that would be tactically advantageous.

The downside of this power is that it cannot be consciously triggered, and it only shows him the personal consequences of his actions - while his precog might allow him to move out of the way of a sniper's bullet, it wouldn't show him that the bullet would go on to strike one of his allies, putting him in possibly a worse situation.

Outside of his mutant power, North is a trained martial artist and marksman, preferring automatic pistols to any other sort of firearm. He is an excellent investigative agent with years of training with the Stasi and Weapon X. Due to his time undercover in the David North identity, he also possesses extensive knowledge of financial accounting procedures and both domestic and international business and finance law.

Equipment

Carries various firearms, preferring a H&K MK23 MOD 0 semi-automatic handgun.

Trivia

David often uses various stimulants, ranging from caffeine to amphetamines, to "jumpstart" his precognition in noncombat situations. He has described the experience as "like staring into the sun and trying not to blink", and the process is physically debilitating for him.

North's hobbies include restoring antique cuckoo clocks, Alsatian cooking, and listening to obscure German hip-hop music from the 1980s.

During his time with the Stasi, North was responsible for processing a good deal of contraband, and in the process developed a fondness for American pop culture, mostly cowboy western movies.
