When Catseye was born, she already showed signs of physical mutation - miniscule claws and a tail, and she was less than a year old, she developed the ability to change into a small purple kitten, an ability her mother attempted to hide from Catseye's father who was already upset by his daughter's 'deformities'. However, Catseye's older brother Evan was also aware of the kitten, although he did not make the connection between the cat and his baby sister. Once Harold Smith discovered his daughter was a mutant, however, he took the kitten from his home and abandoned her in the city during a snowstorm. After the winter, the Smiths told everyone their daughter had died during the winter.

Catseye was rescued and raised by a pack of alley cats - although aging as a human, she outlived them all. Lost and confused, she was eventually found by an older lady who was only known to neighbors as "the Cat Lady". It was during these years that Catseye discovered the ability to change back to a human form, but thought of herself as a cat.

After the Cat Lady was hospitalised following a stroke, her tribe of cats as taken to a local animal shelter by Animal Control. Upon discovering one of their new acquisitions could in fact turn herself into a human being, the shelter contacted [[Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters]], as they were aware volunteer [[Rahne Sinclair]], herself a shapeshifter, came from there. It was difficult for Catseye to accept she was not in fact a cat, but she began making inroads and eventually decided to try living with her brother away from the school.

Catseye is a [[metamorph]], shifting from a human form into a feline form. She has shown the ability to shift into a medium-sized housecat while retaining her full intelligence, although she cannot directly speak in this form. As a cat, the has the normal physical abilities of a common housecat. She has also displayed the ability to shift into a much larger feline form, similar to that of a mountain lion or cougar. In this form, her intellect is reduced to a more primitive state, and she operates primarily on instinct.

Artie Maddicks: Artie has been at the school for as long, if not longer, than the older students such as Kitty Pryde and Theresa Cassidy. Little is known about his background: when Sarah Morlocke arrived, she identified him as one of the tunnel-dwelling Morlocks who had somehow survived the massacre. Artie himself has been unable to communicate much of what happened - he appears to have no great memory of his life before Xavier's, and his inability to speak also makes things difficult.

At the school, he originally shared a suite with Doug Ramsey and Jamie Madrox, becoming roommate and inseparable best friend to Miles Blaire when he was brought to the school by Alison. Sarah later identified Miles as another Morlock, however he too had no memory of that life. With the departure of Jamie, Miles and Alison to the West Coast Annex and Doug's job with the Snow Valley Memorial Center for Mutant Affairs, Artie lost most of his friends. He rooms now with Leong Manh, brother to Xuân, and along with Leong's sister Nga and Shiro's little sister Leyu, is one of the school's floating population of students. He started high school in 2007, no longer one of the 'little ones'.

Artie has a blue, forked tongue, much like a lizard's or a snake's, which renders him unable to speak. He is compensated by the ability to project images or 'psychic holograms' of varying complexity - this ability has improved over time, and his images have become gradually more realistic from the basic 'stick drawings' of his early life.
