Grateful for the change in topic, Jean nodded. "I'll take it," she said. There were few that could potentially help her in this situation. She didn't feel like turning to magic either. The mind was their realm. "Okay. This shouldn't take long." With the other telepath unable to meet him in the middle, physical contact would act as the easiest bridge. Jim placed his fingertips to Jean's temple and closed his eyes. There were different ways of seeing, especially on the astral plane. An individual's self-image was deeply personal; it said as much about who they felt themselves to be as who they were. Normally Jean appeared in her mind as she appeared in reality: a little brighter, perhaps, more vibrant, but firmly connected to who she was on the outside. The Jean he saw now was not. Soot smudged her skin and darkened her hair. Her clothing was dirty with ash and dried blood, although it did not seem to be from any wound of her own. Her neck was ringed with bruises in the shape of a clutching hand. Her body was next to him, but her mind was still processing what had happened in New Orleans. Like a man unfocusing his eyes to view the image hidden in a stereogram, Jim exhaled and moved now to a different view. He sought to perceive not how Jean saw herself, but her connection to her powers and how they rested within her. Jim had seen Jean in action on the astral plane before. In that state her power pulsed beneath her skin like living flame. Now, though, he sat beside a woman of char and ash. A shell, blackened and cold, like a burned-out fire. Empty. Jim pulled his hand away. Jean studied him carefully. The heartache of it was that she didn't feel a thing when he was in her mind. Normally she could sense it, a tremor, a ripple, something out of place. But now...nothing. Had he not asked she would have never known. She felt vulnerable. "Well? What did you see?" "An absence." Jim paused, trying to put his interpretation into words. "I didn't detect a mental block. I did sense . . . fatigue. That points towards burnout. But with magic involved it's hard to tell if it was a natural consequence of using so much power, or some kind of price. I don't know much about magic, but I do know it doesn't give you something for nothing. Either way, for the moment it seems like your powers are gone. Or" he added thoughtfully, "recovering." Letting out a breath, Jean rubbed her forehead. "Let's hope for the latter," she said before folding her arms awkwardly. "You know when you're in a conversation with a bunch of people at a party and at one point everyone goes quiet at the same time? It's like that right now. It's...unnerving." Operation: Wonderwall: Tuesday happens again, with Wade answering the phone and Emma attending the bail hearing and Wanda is sure she’s done this before; this time the battle goes differently and the loop is broken, but at a cost; X-Force escapes, but Heinrich Zemo and Amora are still alive. 2016: Maya makes a journal entry about a Twitter post about people appropriating and disrespecting a tribe’s culture. Adrienne makes a journal entry about the night before and her fuzzy memory of same. Cecila makes a journal entry about how she enjoyed her two weeks off. Alex and Lorna go shopping for their upcoming hike. 2017: 2018: In the medlab Topaz is climbing the walls and Cecilia tries to calm her down. Doug posts about how much his body hurts, Quentin chimes in suggesting he get a fake one. Sins of the Father: Amanda posts asking the rest of X-Force how bad the situation with Topaz really was. 2019: Megan breathes in her own dust and gets a bit randomly philosophical about the nature of self and time. 2020: 2021: Arise, X-Man: Laurie goes to Doug to ask for some help. Marie-Ange emails Darcy about the pasta divining and asks for her CV. Jean emails Maya, Nica, and Quentin to thank them. Sons of Mutancy: Brand reaches out to Garrison, offering an open-information relationship with SWORD; Garrison gathers Betsy, Callisto, Gabriel, Jean, Kyle, Matt, Maya, Nica, Sooraya and Wanda to get the details for Brand's mission; Kyle gives Maya the downlow on Brand and why the X-Men agreed. 2022: Marie-Ange shares her new favorite deck and does a number of readings for people. 2023: Darcy and Warren meet for brunch. Rictor has a mild freakout during his Danger Room session with Kane. He later asks Shatterstar if they’re still up for movie night. 2024: Clea tells Sharon about her experience with Bloodstone, and it doesn't go well. PHASE 1 2003: Betsy receives a parcel of legal documents. Rahne practices being a wolf. 2004: 2005: Alison pushes too hard at training, and this time Haroun pays the price. An Offer You Can Refuse: Amanda goes to Strange's class as if nothing happened, but he has other opinions. It's all downhill from there. And then Selene makes her an offer, which is refused. Scott complains about his crutches. 2008: Seven Minutes In Heaven: Pete sets the Snow Valley team to finding Lense. 2009: Operation: Dead Letter Office: Mark and Illyana scope out a golf course taking pictures of suspicious people in attempt to find out who is running the auction for the synthesizer in Sun City; Mark posts to the Snow Valley comm to inform the Trenchcoats that the seller's name is Gareb Bashurand that the route the package is taking to get to Sun City has been ascertained; Jake calls Wanda to lift his spirits in the wake of dealing with his family. Julian emails Yvette to congratulate her on getting her learner's permit. Callie finds Catseye struggling to maintain balance on her bicycle and suggests training wheels (and a helmet.) Cammie visits Nathan in the infirmary and defends her opinion that he's crazy. On his way out after a Danger Room session, Jay notices Shiro in the room and goes to speak with him - Shiro is not pleased that his breakup with Kali did not go well and Jay challenges him to 'scuffle' to release some of his pent-up energy, and in the heat of the game both are injured; Sarah feels the damage done to the Danger Room and comments on it; Garrison lectures Jay in the medbay while Scott goes to speak to Shiro in the isolation room to chastise him for running a life-threatening training programme with a non- X-Man and instructs him to take a break from the team and the Danger Room. 2010: Butterflies and Hurricanes: Vanessa goes to the hospital to check up on her various missing persons and finds someone she didn't expect as well as a potential lead; Vanessa texts Jean-Paul, asking him to spy on Haven; Vanessa then e-mails Bishop about her findings, and she trades Laurie to him as his new assistant. 2011: 2012: Clarice posts about a possible vacation.
